New Apple Exclusive Reveals iPhone 14 Speed Shock

iPhone 14 Pro performance is expected to leave iPhone 14 models in the dust, and now we might just have our best look yet at how much.

MacWorld’s Jason Cross has published a detailed breakdown of every leaked iPhone 14 Pro component and combined it with public information from suppliers to reveal “performance beyond a speed boost”. The headlines are a 25-30% boost in graphics performance and a massive 50% increase in memory bandwidth. But there is disappointment when it comes to the CPU.

Cross projects Apple’s A16 chip will deliver just a 15% increase in CPU performance compared to the A15 chip in the iPhone 13 lineup, which is expected to be used again in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. This is a shock given a leak last month claimed a CPU leap of > 40%, though that source agrees with the circa 30% GPU estimates.

In isolation, a 15% bump would not be surprising because Apple has had more iterative CPU gains in recent years. That said, 2022 marks the year Apple will widen the gap between iPhone Pro and non-Pro models with significant differences in design, camera resolution and chipset generations. As such, a more substantial gap was anticipated here.

That said, RAM is likely to be the big driver here. As previously reported, Apple is tipped to transition iPhone 14 Pro models to LPDDR5 RAM, which is 1.5x faster (6400 Vs 4266 Mbps) than LPDDR4x and 30% more power-efficient. RAM has long been the easiest way to boost system performance, and iPhone 14 Pro models look set to make a statement here.

In addition, iPhone 14 Pro models are also tipped to gain much faster charging. Achieving a 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes (half the time of its predecessor) and lasting over two hours longer than the iPhone 13 Pro.

Of course, this all comes at a cost, with iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models expected to be more expensive than ever before. Then again, with the entire iPhone 14 range tipped to rise by at least $100, it might just be the step up to Pro, which drives the most sales.
